I am so excited to finally share my son’s bedroom makeover reveal with you all! I received a lot of questions about his room on IG, so I am hoping I can answer them in this post. Every summer when I am off of work, I try to take on a larger project in my home. This summer, I focused on my son’s bedroom and I am so happy with how it turned out!
I knew I couldn’t give this room my normal girly-glam touch, so it definitely took some extra thinking on my part. My son made sure to steer me clear of sparkly chandeliers and anything bling for that matter! He played a large role in making decisions for his bedroom makeover.
We put together a design board for my son’s bedroom makeover, which I shared with you in a previous post (see picture above). This is a collection of our ideas for what we wanted to see in his bedroom based on our style and budget. I was trying to stay under $2,000 for the entire room, so we chose furniture and decor accordingly.
Out With The Old
The first thing he wanted to change out were his bunk beds (see the “before” picture of his room above). I mentioned in my previous post about his bedroom how I often use Offer Up to sell furniture or decor that I want to get rid of. It is free to sign up and easy to use this platform for buying or selling. We were successful at selling his bunk beds and large cabinet very quickly in the Offer Up app.
Let the Fun Begin
Once the room was cleared out, I hired my handyman dad to install the faux wood wallpaper on the accent wall. The window wall was previously painted black and I thought about painting it to match the other gray walls (Sterling by Behr), but I’m happy I decided to keep it black. It’s kind of like having two accent walls in the room now. I wanted to add curtains to the window to bring contrast to the dark wall and to frame out the window (see below).
Style tip: Hanging curtains closer to the ceiling helps accentuate the height of a room.
Statement Pieces
The bookshelves next to the bed were my son’s idea. He really enjoys reading and he wanted shelving to display his book collections rather than adding the usual nightstands (which is what I originally planned to do). I thought the bookshelves were a great idea so we ordered one for each side of his bed. He decorated each shelf by himself (I only added the small plants).
I was so fortunate to have collaborated with Maxim Lighting for the perfect modern light fixture for my son’s bedroom. It really creates a statement and was the center of our whole design plan. I had several options in mind when planning this room makeover, but my son loved this one the most. I think it looks perfect in here!
The queen-sized bed is one of the best purchases I made for this room. It was such a good price (less than $300), easy to put together, and looks great! We ended up hanging the lighted name letters on the wall with velcro because it was so much easier to ensure we hung them level rather than using nails and making 100 holes in the wall! We can easily remove the letters for battery changes, when necessary.
Our Favorite Features
The swing is my son’s favorite part of his bedroom makeover. I think it’s my favorite too! This again was completely his idea. He wanted a cool, relaxing spot to sit and watch his tv or read. This is where I find him 80% of the time now! The swing is made for indoors or outdoors and even has cupholders on each side (note the remote he placed there). We did have to buy hardware and an extension because the chain it comes with is not long enough for hanging it from a ceiling.
We added a small desk that matches well with the bookshelves even thought it’s a completely different brand/manufacturer. I couldn’t believe it didn’t require any tools to assemble! It just snaps together in three places! The desk and chair were both great Amazon finds!
My son LOVES Stranger Things and couldn’t wait for the new season to start. He decided to replace his old Minecraft poster with a Stranger Things 3 poster (see below). He enjoys having this small space in his room to study and do homework.
The rug is from Home Dynamix, who I was also fortunate to collaborate with for this makeover. Home Dynamix has so many beautiful rugs that it made it difficult to choose just one, but we finally decided on this option from their Nova line. I like how it adds a subtle texture to the room. I think it gives this bedroom a perfect modern touch without being too much!
Online Shopping
Can you believe that almost all of the items we used for my son’s bedroom makeover were bought online and delivered within just a few days? Talk about convenience! Gotta love online shopping! The comforter and a couple of plants for the shelves were the only things I bought in a store (HomeGoods).
I hope this helps answer some of your questions. My son and I are so excited with how his room turned out. We love it! What do you think?

You did an amazing job in your son’s room. He has an eye for design as well. I’m so glad you shared this because it’s so hard to find inspiration for boy’s rooms, especially when they are no longer little boys. I struggle with this for my two boys. Thank you so much for sharing.

You are so welcome! Boys bedrooms can be difficult for me too because I have a very feminine style! I am so happy to share any inspiration that I can!
