I’ve recently shared that I am currently in the process of sprucing up my son’s bedroom from a less “kiddish” looking room to more of the “tween” bedroom that he’s been wanting. I figured I would share my son’s bedroom makeover process with you all so you can see the steps I take whenever I plan a makeover for any room in my home. First off, his bedroom wasn’t that bad to begin with, but it also wasn’t anything special (see image below). He is just quickly growing out of his bunk beds, ready to move onto a more “tween” type of room. We decided we would make this one of our fun summer projects.
First Step – Find Inspiration Pics
If I don’t have an idea already in mind, I usually start by browsing the internet for inspiration pics/images. For this specific room, I searched “boys bedroom“, “boys bedroom inspiration“, and “boys tween bedroom“. It also often helps to be more specific in terms of the style I am looking for. For example, I was looking for a somewhat rustic and modern theme, so I used the terms “boys rustic modern bedroom ideas” to give me a better look at that specific style. There are tons of different ways to search for inspiration. I love that there are so many sources we have right at our fingertips to help us nowadays! My son and I went through images we found from our different search results and combined ideas that we both liked for the room.
Next Step – Design Board
Once I have an idea of the type of furniture and decor I am looking for, I begin creating a design board, which is basically just a collage of ideas/shoppable items for the room. Based on the look we were going for, we created this design board:
More About Our Choices
If you’ve been following me for some time, you know how much I love statement lighting. I partnered with Maxim Lighting to find the perfect statement piece for this room. My son and I both agree that the lighting we chose gives his bedroom the modern touch we were going for. In addition to lighting, I always like to add an accent wall to a room, which gives the room more character. I found the perfect rustic modern wallpaper on Wayfair and decided to go with it. For the bed, were looking for a cost-effective one that would look nice in a boy’s room. The bed we chose was an amazing price, easy to install, and looks great! My son LOVES to read and has a ton of books that he wanted to display, so we knew we needed bookshelves. We decided to add one on each side of the bed for extra shelving and were able to find an option with the perfect modern rustic combination. The swing was a fun idea my son added in addition to his desk and chair he plans on using when he does his homework.
Third Step – Clear Out Old Items
This is the not so fun part of my son’s bedroom makeover process. If you have items you have to get rid of like I did, one of the easiest and quickest ways to sell your things is through the app Offer Up. I continue to have success selling my items through this platform. I sold my son’s bunkbeds and large wardrobe cabinet, and then moved all his other things to another room until I get the room situated and can move things back.
Final Step – Order and Install
This is where I am currently. I have everything ordered and am working on installing it all, so I promise to be back shortly with an update! Please feel free to comment or ask questions regarding his bedroom makeover process in the meantime. Excited to share the final reveal soon!
