If you are looking for a fun Christmas craft or thinking of creating a beautiful, homemade gift for someone special this holiday season, I’ve got the perfect idea. How about these gorgeous DIY Christmas candles? I have never made candles before, so I wasn’t quite sure how this would all turn out, but I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised! The process was actually much easier than I expected and I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you.
What You’ll Need
- Candle-making kit (includes melting pot, small bag of wax, candle wicks, stir stick)
- Extra candle wax if you plan to make several candles
- Peppermint oil (or other scented oil of your choice)
- Pretty jars
- Mod Podge glue
- Small paintbrush for applying the glue
- Glitter
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Brooches or buttons
- Rhinestone trim
- Hot Glue
Starting Out – Decorating the Candle Jar
If you want to give an extra sparkle to your jars, start out by covering the outside with Mod Podge using a small paintbrush. Then add glitter of your choice. I applied white glitter towards the bottom of the jar to resemble snow.
Next, I decided to add a little extra bling by applying rhinestone trim along the outside edge of the lid using hot glue. I also tied ribbon around the lid and glued a cute brooch in the middle. An extra strand of rhinestone trim was placed under the ribbon with a little hot glue to hold it in place.
Next Step – The Candle Wax
If you purchase the same candle-making kit I used, it comes with instructions on how to melt the wax. Basically, you will place the wax pieces inside the melting pot and then place the melting pot in the center of a larger pot of water. Then, heat the water and continuously stir the wax until it is melted. If you prefer, you can add a scented oil of your choice. I went with peppermint because it’s perfect for the holiday season.
Once the wax is completely liquified, it can be removed from the pot of water and cooled for just a few minutes. In the meantime, place the wicks in the bottom center of the jars. The kit includes wick applicators and tools for keeping them centered. Next, the wax can be carefully poured into the jar.
Finally, just cut the wick and let the wax cool. The wax is a yellow color in liquid form and will whiten as it solidifies.
