One of my favorite projects that I’ve completed in my home would definitely have to be my pantry makeover. We’ve lived in this house for over four years and it is our fist time having a larger walk-in pantry, which is a very wonderful thing to have IF it’s organized properly. Mine was the total opposite of organized for way too long. See the image below to see what I mean and please don’t judge.
The Organizing Process
When I finally had the time and found the motivation to begin working on my pantry makeover, I first measured the shelves. Then I put together a plan for baskets, containers, and other organizing essentials. I also measured the square footage of the wall because I planned to add peel-and-stick wallpaper. Most of what I wanted I found online (links to everything can be found at the bottom). I ordered everything I figured I would need for organizing this space.
The next step is the NO FUN part and the main reason I put off organizing my pantry for so long. I knew if I removed EVERYTHING from the shelves and set it out to go through it would be too overwhelming, so I worked on one shelf at a time. I removed everything from the shelf, threw away the junk (old food, empty boxes, etc.). Then I wiped down the shelves and wallpapered the back wall prior to putting everything back in its place. Being organized is always my goal, but life takes over sometimes and priorities get flipped around if you know what I mean.
One by one, I got my shelves organized and I got a little bit more excited with each one I completed! But even though I finally finished organizing the inside of my pantry, I wasn’t quite done yet. I wanted to do something with the pantry door to make it a little more appealing. I decided on installing a sliding barn door similar to the one I created for my master bedroom.
The New Pantry Door
I figured a sliding door would look nice if it was left open to showcase the newly organized pantry. I measured the doorway and ordered one that I fell in love with. What I like about the barn door I ordered is that it came with all of the hardware except the door handle.
Once my new door was up and customized the way I wanted it, my organized pantry was finally completed!! It has now been over four months since I took on this project. I have to say that creating a space for all of the different food items and supplies has helped us to keep everything more organized overall. My family no longer just throws things in the pantry wherever we can find space. Everything has its place now and I love it!
Finding Motivation
I found that other than finding time, finding motivation was a key factor in getting this project done. It wasn’t a quick DIY that I could tackle in one day. In fact, between juggling work, family, household chores (and on and on), I understand how difficult it can be to begin and finish a task like this. There are two main things that helped me get motivated: focusing on the end result and breaking the whole process down into smaller steps (i.e., completing one shelf at a time). Each day I wrote down a goal and checked it off once I completed it. Who else finds check-off lists super satisfying? For anyone not knowing where to start when a large project or task is in front of you, I recommend planning out a small goal each day and focusing on one step at a time.
