When I first started this project, I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going with it. I kept tweaking my plans here and there and I have to say I absolutely LOVE the end result. Funny how that happens sometimes. Now that I figured it out, I wanted to share these gorgeous and super easy-to-make DIY feather Christmas trees with you in case you want to do something similar.
Originally, I planned on creating an all-brooch covered tree with lots of sparkle and shine. I had seen something like that on the Totally Dazzled website and loved it. Halfway through, I ended up taking it all apart because I wasn’t happy with how it was coming together. I didn’t want to give up, though. I had just bought a few styrofoam trees and was determined to create something beautiful with them.
I remembered that I had recently ordered some white feather boas for my Christmas tree that I didn’t end up using on my tree. I decided I could try wrapping the styrofoam trees with the white boas to see how that would look. Once I got started, it really only took a few minutes to get the trees covered. The rest is history!
What You’ll Need
- Two styrofoam trees (Click here to shop a pack of tall trees. Click here to shop a pack of small trees.)
- Two feather boas (Click here to shop a pack of 3 white boas.)
- Two large brooches or flat backs (Click here to shop.)
- Two small cake stands or shallow candle holders (My cake stand was from HomeGoods. Candle holder was from Bath and Body Works.)
- Scissors
- Glue gun with glue sticks
- 4 toothpicks
What You’ll Do
This is probably one of the quickest and easiest DIYs you can ever do! Start out by adding hot glue to the bottom of the styrofoam tree (enough glue for the boa to hold). I did this a little at a time to prevent feathers from sticking all over the place. Little by little, add more glue and press the center of the boa on the glue to ensure it has a good hold. Keep wrapping/gluing the boa around the tree until you get all the way to the top. Once you’ve reached the top, you can cut the remaining boa with a scissors. Just FYI – you will probably have feathers everywhere! Yes, it gets a little messy, but nothing a handheld vacuum can’t fix.
There might be a better way to do this next step, but for lack of other available materials, I used toothpicks. Add a little hot glue to the center and bottom of the brooch or flat back you plan to use. Place 2 toothpicks on top of the glue. Let the glue cool and then stick the brooch in the top of your tree using the attached toothpicks (see below). Push it down carefully (I recommend holding it in the center so the brooch doesn’t come apart from the toothpicks) until none of the toothpicks are showing. Once it is in place, you can glue a small feather on the back of the toothpicks so it covers them up a little more.
If at First You Don’t Succeed
I finished gluing on the boas and the trees looked so white and fluffy. They were really pretty, but I still felt like something was missing. In addition, I wasn’t really fond of all the feathers hanging down at the bottom of the tree (see below).
I figured it would look pretty if the trees had something to stand on, so I began looking around my home for something I could use. I ended up deciding on a small silver cake stand that I got from HomeGoods and a jeweled candle holder that I had bought at Bath and Body Works a few years ago (I tried to find it on their website for you, but I don’t see it there anymore).
I placed one tree on the cake stand and one in the shallow candle holder and then decided to trim the bottom feathers with scissors (yes – a feather mess was created once again). That really seemed to be the missing touch! I was completely in love with my DIY feather Christmas trees!
So quick and easy to make! I’d love to hear what you think! Feel free to leave comments and/or questions below.
